My sister, Mindy was diagnosed with carcinoid cancer in February of this year. As I understand it, this is a rare cancer that has a primary tumor and then hops around to different part of the body. Her primary tumor was in her colon, which was removed during a colon resection. They took out about 11 inches of colon, then reattached it back together. This way, she does not have to wear a "bag." The bad news was that it had metastisized (spread) to her liver. This is inoperable. Over these past months, she has had numerous tests, scans, bloodwork, etc. She is in a support group, though. I hope that they are helping her.
I am so amazed at how slow everything is. I mean, this is a disease that can kill you! It takes 4 weeks just to get an appointment with the cancer specialist (oncologist)! Then weeks go by before the tests can get set up and run. More weeks until she sees the oncologist again. I am amazed that she is still alive!!! It has been 7 months since she got this devasting news. This is so damn frustrating.
Now, she has some "suspicious" spots on her ovary. But she sees an gyn/oncologist next week, so maybe we will know more then.
I admire Mindy's positive outlook. She is going to work and just starting a walking program to fight an unexplained weight gain. She looks great, though. Fortunatly, she has me to "dump on." I know she gets depressed; who wouldn't. I am here, girl!!!
This is my first attempt at blogging. More on Mindy's journey later.
